Straight down the middle. It went straight down the middle. Then it started.
Mike GonzalezAnd the event in 1958, uh Bruce, as I recall, you had an opportunity to meet Bobby Jones at the old course.
Bruce DevlinI had I had the most remarkable evening that I've ever spent in my life. That that particular evening on the uh Thursday night, uh the city of St. Andrews gave Bobby Jones the keys to the city. And of course, in those days he was he was in his wheelchair. So uh they wheeled him into the auditorium there. They had it in the town hall, and uh when when he got up to make his speech, he he s he actually pulled himself out of the chair to an upright position in front of the microphone and just gave the most wonderful speech that you you know I I don't think it was a dry eye in the house. So it was quite remarkable. And you know, when you think of think of what he did as a player, uh, as Ben said, he not only was a great player, but he was a you know a great orator and a serious thinker. It was a terrific night.
SPEAKER_00I have I have a copy of that speech, and uh I'm just so heartened to know that you were there. Uh uh you it was um quite an occasion, as Bruce said. I I've read about it, but to know that you were there I know that you felt the full gravity of of uh of how he made that speech. Um and as an extemporaneous speech, it had to be one of the best of all time. Uh it talked about it talked about talked about friendship uh amongst the nations, but uh personal friendships and what what the word meant to him. And uh I remember talking to the great sports writer Herbert Warren Wynn, who was there, and he said after he spoke, he's no he said nobody could talk for ten minutes. It was so powerful.
Bruce DevlinIt went straight for it. Quite an occasion, Peter. Then it started.

Outro MusicIt went smack down the fairway. Then it started to slice just smidge off line. It headed for two, but it bounced off nine. My caddy says long as you're still in the state, you're okay.
