World Golf Hall of Fame member Larry Nelson won the 1981 PGA Championship at Atlanta Athletic Club sporting the iconic Amana golf hat. Frank Chirkinian, the famous golf producer/director from CBS wouldn't show him on television wearing the hat unless he was in the lead, which Larry talks about, "FORE the Good of the Game."

Intro Music

Straight down the middle. It went straight down the middle.

Mike Gonzalez

Then it started to So before we start uh talking about your major championship performance, uh uh you gotta remind our listeners about the Amana hat and and what the deal was for you guys because they paid you a little stipend to wear it. What was the deal back then with those?

Larry Nelson

Uh well it they paid you$100 a week. You know, that and I was trying to figure out that probably paid at that time probably paid for our meals for a week, uh I would think. But the big deal is you got a chance to go up to a Man Iowa and do their casino and play in the tournament. You know, they it was a big deal. Um I don't think anybody did it for the$100 a week. Uh and uh we get the Roy Clark would sing and you know they'd have uh so it was just it was a good deal. And uh so I wore the hat for I guess three years, maybe seventy-nine probably seventy-nine till uh through eighty-three, and then uh that was it. But um it was a pretty good deal. Matter of fact, I still have one. Uh Atlanta Country Club has one of my old bags and some of the old clubs and my amount of head on one of the clubs.

Mike Gonzalez

So it was a brilliant marketing maneuver back then by whoever developed that idea.

Larry Nelson

Oh, it was. I mean, uh Frank Chikinnigan said he wouldn't show me on television uh if because I was wearing the amount of head. He said unless I was winning, he wouldn't show me. Yeah. But because they didn't spend any money advertising, and that that was his thing, but but he showed a lot of the Michelope guys. So I wonder what was happening there.

Intro Music

Yeah, I wonder. Yeah, I wonder.

Mike Gonzalez

Intro Music

Whack down the fairway. It went smack down the fairway. Then it started to slice, just smidge off line. It headed for two, but it bounced off nine. My cadets, as long as you're still in the state, you're okay.
